April Garden Jobs

Back to news

Now Spring is here, it’s time to do a few jobs for a healthy Summer garden…

Lawns should start to look better with the rain and warmer weather, but treat them with a proprietary lawn feed and weed to ensure the grass gets off to a good start to the season - and the weeds don’t. This will also kill off most of the moss, which will then need raking out.

Mulch your beds and borders, adding welcome organic matter to the soil and reducing the amount of weeding and watering needed in the coming months.

Ideally, plant new perennials by the end of the month.

Remove winter protection from Alpines and top up any grit that may be getting thin.

Lavender and Santolina should be trimmed now, to maintain their bushy shapes.

Feed and mulch Roses.

If you have Phormiums, pull off the outer dead leaves and divide congested clumps. Always look out for shoots on variegated plants that might be reverting to green and remove them.

Provide advanced support for any plants that will need it – it’s better to let the plants grow into their supports rather than trying to tie up floppy stems later.

And finally, hope for some warm weather so we can enjoy relaxing in the garden very soon!
